THANET KEEN FOR SUCCESS IN KSG
The Kent School Games are the biggest in the country. Local Sports partnerships, aided by local competition managers (ours is Paralympian Alastair McKean), have held a series of qualifying events throughout the year to find the best teams in the district in sports from tri-golf to gymnastics, as well as in mainstream sports like football and athletics. Local schools supported by School Sport Co-ordinators (SSCos) have done their best to participate and the teams entered know they have had to compete to a relatively high level to be successful. Credit must go to schools like Drapers Mills who entered nearly everything, giving a large number of students the opportunity to compete, but just came up short in qualification.
So, having put up an excellent performance in 2008 at the inaugural Kent School Games the Thanet team, including sides from a mixture of Primary and Secondary schools taking part in a wide range of sporting events, are very optimistic about their chances of matching the results of two years ago. Then Northdown (basketball) and St Peter’s (football) were winners, whilst Upton and Cliftonville, among others, did very well in the Primary events. Secondary schools also put up strong performances, so we can be optimistic. This year, Upton, as a large Junior school with a long-standing tradition of sport, now promoted by Dave Walker, offer a number of teams. They have been helped as the number of sports has expanded, and there is every chance of the school, among others, returning for the Thanet Partnership with winners’ medals. In the Secondary events, Dane Court have chances in golf and Under 13 table tennis among other events, whilst Chatham House could do well in badminton and tennis. Ursuline Girl basketball team have Kent squad players in their team so they also are optimistic aided by the coaching of Mads Oleson.
Hilary Farmiloe, Partnership Development Manager in Thanet said “ We should be proud of the efforts put in by schools and SSCos in arranging events allowing us to put this very strong Thanet team together. Many schools took part in qualifying events. For some Secondary school events they even had to pass through regional qualifying. This is a great mass participation weekend and we hope that the Thanet team returns with a number of medals. We also hope they compete recognizing the key Olympic values central to the purpose of the Kent School Games.”

As competition is central to the new Government’s strategy it would have pleased Minister for Sport, Hugh Robertson, and his two Conservative colleagues from Thanet - who were unfortunately unable to make it - to see a positive sporting celebration…
